About Us

Fibro Light Technology Inc., a division of CFMII Technologies Inc., is a small high-tech company located in Goderich Ontario.  Our investigators are focused on research, development discovery and design of innovative, energy efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for water purification, wind energy, and lighting applications.

We seek out problems and issues in the field and research ways to replace current technologies with environmentally friendly and energy efficient solutions.  Our research seeks products, processes and technology that will offer low cost alternatives, or significant yield improvements in present methods. Once we have found solutions that work, we seek to commercialize them either through our own activities, or in conjunction with partners and licensees.

Our Successes

Huron Manufacturing Excellence Award:

Fibro Light Technology are the 2006 co-winners, with Miser Lighting Inc., of the Huron Manufacturers Association award for the most innovative new product of the year.
Our work on induction lamp technology led to a new High Bay lighting product, currently being commercialized by Miser Lighting Inc. Our R&D has produced a fixture which can replace the typical 400 watt high bay metal halide or HPS fixture (which usually uses about 450 watts of energy when ballast losses are included), with a fixture which consumes only 204 watts of energy and has a lifespan of 100,000 hours of operation!

The new highbay fixtures from Miser Lighting can save customers around 50% on the cost of typical high bay lights in energy and maintenance over the life of the fixture.

UV Water Disinfection:
Fibro Light has designed and prototyped a unique UV water treatment system adaptable to either "point of use" or "whole house" applications. An initial Canadian patent on the UV water disinfection technology, has been granted. A further US patent, covering the specifics of the technology application in this system, has been granted [CA 2477029  (Canada) - 7,002,140 (USA)]  . Other patents on commercial scale adaptations of the technology are in preparation.

The design of the UV system obviates some of the major drawbacks of existing systems by placing the UV light source outside the water chamber so that no "drowned tube" is involved. This reduces the risk to consumers of ingesting glass particles and mercury in the event that a water pressure surge breaks the UV lamp and the tube as found in conventional designs.

The System is designed to reduce scale build-up obviating frequent cleaning by the user. The system is about 30% of the size of competing systems on the market.
Computer modeling studies were undertaken which predicated results over 6 times the lethal dose would be delivered into the water. Prototypes have been designed, constructed and tested. Test results show an almost log 3 reduction in pathogens when operated at the design specification in a whole house application. In a point of use application where flow is limited, a log 5 reduction in pathogens can be expected.

Fibro Light Technology has partnered with RK Global Consultants and the two companies have entered the design for manufacturing phase. RK Global is an international company with extensive engineering, product development and manufacturing experience.

Energy Efficient Lighting:
Fibro Light undertook research into improved and energy efficient lighting systems. We have partnered with a manufacturer in China and have designed and tested a variety of fixtures. Testing results on some of our magnetic induction lighting lighting fixtures indicated a saving of energy of close to 50% while maintaining light output.
Magnetic Induction lighting is currently the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly lighting technology on the planet.  For those not familiar with Magnetic Induction Lighting, you can Click Here for a detailed article on the technology.
The results of our research are now being commercialized in a range of products by another division of the CFMII Technologies Group, Miser Lighting Inc.
Recently, (in conjunction with Miser Lighting) we undertook a renovation of the lighting in a typical manufacturers office as a case study. Detailed light level measurements were made; replacement lamps and fixtures were installed, followed by a second set of detailed measurements.
In summary, the Fibro Light designed technology reduced energy consumption by 77% while increasing light levels by 45% - a significant energy savings and light level improvement.

Wind Turbines:
A detailed evaluation of the state of the art in wind energy was undertaken. Large quantities of data were collected and analyzed. Further research determined that existing "propeller" type wind turbines were not as efficient as they could be due to the high overhead involved in their control. They are also not well suited to urban environments due to noise from the blades and ice build up in colder climates..

Fibro Light has undertaken the development and prototyping of a more rugged design of vertical axis wind turbine that would be more suited to these applications and especially to urban environments. Our turbine includes a unique, self-starting, omni directional rotor designed to be simple to manufacture and to be virtually maintenance free.

The turbine system has a minimal number of moving parts to reduce maintenance requirements. The electrical generator uses a unique design, which has only one moving part and which has no brushes or commutators to wear out. Further technological innovations are included in the design but cannot be discussed here, as they may be patentable.

Agricultural applications:
Fibro Light has conducted initial research on a number of agricultural applications. We have compiled data which indicates we can increase dairy cow milk output by 10-15% through the use of specific lighting systems and techniques. The next phase will be to design the fixtures and control systems and then do field validation testing.
We are also researching energy efficient greenhouse lighting systems with alternatives to conventional lamps.
We have also completed theoretical work on an agricultural sterilization system, which uses electrically charged water in place of chemicals.
This technology shows great potential to reduce, and in some case eliminate, the requirement for environmentally damaging chemical compounds.  We intend to follow up on this with computer modeling studies and the construction and testing of prototypes.

Principal Researchers

L. Michael Roberts is the father of the laser display industry in Canada with 30 years experience working with laser systems and optics of various types. He has scored an impressive number of firsts and awards and is the author of the only technical manual in the field. He has also become a much sought after consultant - providing tech support, applications engineering, product design/engineering, system enhancements and project management. His clients have varied from the Antimatter group at CERN to manufacturers of laser systems and products in NAFTA, Europe and Asia.
Michael brings an eclectic mix of skills to the company with specialty in lasers and optics. He has contributed design improvements to Fibro Light technology and in conjunction with his colleagues, has other patents pending in agricultural lighting, self-powered street lighting, and daylight-harvesting systems. He is presently researching innovative technologies in UV and visible light Magnetic Induction Lamps.
Michael recently became only the seventh person ever to be awarded the prestigious International Laser Display Association (ILDA) Career Achievement Award in the 21 year history of ILDA. The ILDA Career Achievement Award honors "exceptional individuals with a distinguished history of achievement in the laser display industry." The Official ILDA web page can be found at http://www.laserist.org/awards2005_career-achievement-award.htm
Michael is also the winner of the Goderich & District Chamber of Commerce "Spirit of Success" award for Entrepreneur of the year 2006.
